The apostle John writes to the church in Smyrna to warn them of future persecution and suffering. Smyrna means Myrrh, which in turn represents suffering. We naturally try to avoid pain and suffering as much as possible, but the New Testament authors have a different perspective on suffering, a positive perspective.
