Peter, the disciple of Jesus, was known for triumphs of faith and profound failures. A good way to frame his story is where Peter meets Jesus at the beginning of the Gospel of John: “You are Simon, the son of John. You will be called Cephas” (which is translated Peter). Jesus knew who Peter was and who he would become, along with all the steps in between. And knowing all this from the start, Jesus invited him in, celebrated in his successes, warned him of the dangers, and forgave him in his failures. In this way, Peter is a prototype of all of us as believers in our life of faith.
