Jesus was put through three religious trials. These were dominated by adherence to rituals and traditions, with a strong desire to maintain the status quo. For all their training and upbringing, the religious leaders were oblivious to the hand of God at work in current events. Then Jesus was put through three civil trials, where the authorities were just as blind to the presence and power of God. We typically view these leaders with disdain for their injustice and petty cruelty, and yet it can be so easy for us to slide into their mindset and be equally captured by rituals and traditions, striving for status while we ignore the true leading of God.
