The Pharisees knew the Scriptures better than anyone else, and yet they rejected Christ. Their focus was the Scriptures, not Christ. We can end up in the same boat if we drift away from placing Christ at the centre of our faith, personal devotions and church teaching. There’s a tendency to push for teaching that is “practical”, “interesting” (i.e. entertaining) or “relevant”, rarely for teaching that is centred in Christ. The apostle Paul warns us about this in 2 Timothy 4.
