Today’s Reading: 1 Samuel 13-14:45, 49-51; 1 Chronicles 9:35-44

It is evident that Saul is in trouble – “You have not kept the command the Lord your God gave you… the Lord has sought out a man after his own heart.” It is quite a comparison between Saul`s army gathering and Gideon`s. Whereas Gideon asked the Lord on every step, including how many soldiers to take with him, Saul seems not care much about asking God for what he supposes to do. Only when he realizes that he was in trouble (i.e. his army was scattered), he wants the favour of the Lord.

Jonathan, his young son, is an interesting character, I find. I am not sure if he really believes in the Lord, when he says “Perhaps the Lord will act in our behalf” – but, despite his doubt, the Lord is gracious to him and gives him the victory – “So the Lord rescued Israel that day”. Even if we have a doubt, the fact that we come to God makes the heart of God so favoured towards us. It is interesting, though, when Saul makes a command, people reply “Do whatever seems best to you”. Compare this answer to Jonathan’s arm-bearer, “Go ahead; I am with you heart and soul”.

Then, here goes Saul making such an idiotic oath! This reminds me of Jepathah’s oath to sacrifice the first thing comes out of his house to the Lord. This leads Saul in the position to carry his oath of cursing his own son, Jonathan. But, unlike Jepathah, Saul could not kill Jonathan because “for he did this today with God’s help”. God was no longer with Saul, ever since he did not keep the command of God.

At this time, I would like to thank everyone to keep up with my daily email for the past 3 months. It was a great experience and I received so much blessings as a result. From April 2nd, Gordie from our church (Eagle Street Christian Fellowship) will continue daily email instead of me, along with Mr. Rob P., for the next 3 months (April to June).
