Today’s Reading: 2 Samuel 2:1-10,12-31; 3:2-29; 4:1-3,5-12; 5:4-5; 1 Chronicles 12:23-40

David, once an insignificant shepherd boy in the wilderness, is anointed and crowned as the shepherd of Judah and Israel (1 Chronicles 11:1-3 on pg. 438). This is the first time a specific human ruler is given the title of “shepherd” in the Bible. Shepherd was a title of honour given to divinities and rulers in the ancient Near East. Not only does this simple title remind us as readers of David’s past occupation as a shepherd of sheep when he was first anointed, but it reinforces David’s position as King of Israel and describes what was to characterize his role as such. It also brings to our mind the Great Shepherd (Hebrews 13:20), Jesus Christ, who is “Great David’s greater Son.”

May we draw ever closer to the Lord this Good Friday as we remember that Good Shepherd (John 10:11) who laid down His life for His sheep (you and me!).
